Industrial Training: Are conventional methods still effective?

  1. Lacks Engagement and Interaction

As evident, traditional methods of training involve an instructor who conducts the session in a one-to-many format. A PowerPoint presentation might be a part of it, along with one or two classes for practical implementation. While the trainer has years of experience related to the training modules, the trainees are only given theoretical information, which limits their performance at the job. Meaning that even though you’ve spent tonnes of money conducting one industrial training session, it does little to no good to the efficiency and effectiveness of the trainee.

  1. Irrelevant at job

Nearly 62 per cent of the employees say that the training imparted to them prior to the exposure to the actual job isn’t relevant. Meaning that what they learned and what needs to be done are totally different. Even though they have spent months undergoing the industrial training sessions, they are not adept in the skills required to do the job. This not only costs the company in terms of time but also makes it difficult for the trainee to perform on the field. This further disrupts the overall productivity leading to poor employee performance and falling company value. 

  1. Long and Boring 

Another reason why the conventional form of training isn’t ideal for Gen Z learners is that they are primarily focused on theories and emphasise content-based learning. This makes the entire process long, unengaging and extremely boring. It is largely possible that the trainees lose interest in the subject and are disengaged from the same.

  1. Field-restrictive

The last couple of years has transformed the way people work. The need to be remotely accessible mandated doing things digitally. The fact that conventional modes of industrial training are classroom-based, they require trainees to be present at the site. And hence are not effective in times of remote learning. In other words, conventional training lacks flexibility and is soon to turn obsolete.

So what is the right form of Industrial Training?

To be honest, there’s no right or wrong form of industrial training. It depends on the technological innovations followed by the needs of the industry.
